How do I choose my new wood floor?
Choosing your wood floor can be a daunting undertaking, but doesn’t have to be. There are four things that we believe go into making the choice of your floor. We would like to help you as much as you need in making the choice for your home.
A. Choose the theme of your home, and find a product that expresses that theme.
Contemporary, Traditional, Rustic, Old World?
B. Choose a budget.
As with all things, wood flooring runs the gamut from the inexpensive to the exorbitant. In this process you need to be confident in the quality of the product.
C. Your budget will now determine the type of product you are looking for:
Prefinished, Custom finished, Solid, etc.
We recommend an overall flooring thickness of at least 1/2″, as thinner products tend to contour
to the subfloor too much and highlight the imperfections in the subfloor.
D. The top veneer, if you are choosing an engineered product, should be at least 3mm thick. Our reasoning for this is refinishing. At some point you are going to need to refinish your floors, and so we recommend planning a product which is able to be refinished.
E. This should cover the essential requirements. There are other considerations, but they are generally details, and a matter of individual preference.
